Chapter 10B: Caught in the Middle

On the World Map

In order to find the rebel forces and obtain some information about the bandits plaguing the Isles, Roy led his forces west along the coastline. On the way, he happened across a small village caught in constant conflict between the rebels and the marquess trying to get rid of them.

Opening Cutscene

(Inside Castle)

Zinc:
"Have you not yet found the rebel forces' strategist?"

Soldier:
"We are still searching for him, my lord."

Zinc:
"And?"

Soldier:
"It appears that he has hidden himself in a village at the foot of the castle..."

Zinc:
"The rebels are just another ragtag band without that Elphin supporting them with his brains. I don't care what happens to the village, just find him!"

Soldier:
"Yes, my lord."

(Soldier leaves. Miledy appears)

Zinc:
"Ah, I apologize for keeping you waiting, my lady."

Miledy:
"You seemed...busy."

Zinc:
"Oh, no, we prioritize allying with Bern above all things. If there is anything we can do for you..."

Miledy:
"Then, as I asked earlier..."

Zinc:
"Ah, the whereabouts of Princess Guinevere."

Miledy:
"Do you have any information, Lord Zinc?"

Zinc:
"I regret to say that I do not. Have you already visited the capital at Djuto?"

Miledy:
"Yes."

Zinc:
"Hm... Then I suggest that you speak with Bishop Oro. He resides in the castle overlooking Mt Ebrakhm in the north. He knows these islands better than any of us, so I'm sure that he would have some helpful information. However, if even he does not know where the princess is, then I would suspect that she is not on these islands at all."

Miledy:
"I see... Thank you, I will talk with Bishop Oro. I appreciate your cooperation, Lord Zinc."

(Scene switches to Roy)

Roy:
"Is this the area where the rebels are most active?"

Merlinus:
"Yes, according to our sources. However, I also heard that earlier this week, the rebels were hunted down by the Etrurian military and decimated."

Roy:
"...The Etrurian government overlooks the bandits, yet oppresses the rebels who are trying to help the people? This doesn't look good at all..."

Merlinus:
"Indeed..."

Roy:
"Is there anything we can do?"

Merlinus:
"That would be difficult... We would be turning against the Etrurian court. I can't say that would be a good idea when we were sent here under their orders."

Roy:
"I'll send a messenger to General Cecilia and see what she has to say. We probably shouldn't do anything too risky right now..."

(A Soldier appears)

Soldier:
"Master Roy! We have received a report that the lord of this area has dispatched troops to attack the villages and hunt down the remnants of the rebels!"

Merlinus:
"What! Master Roy, should we...?"

Roy:
"Well, I guess we don't have time to wait for General Cecilia's opinion... I want to help the people here. Even if it means that we'll be going against Eturia..."

Merlinus:
"Master Roy..."

Roy:
"Let's fight! So we can be proud when we return to Lycia!"

1st Turn

(Gale and Miledy appear)

Gale:
"Miledy, did you find out anything about Princess Guinevere?"

Miledy:
"No... But I was told that a bishop named Oro in charge of the mines in the north might know something."

Gale:
"All right, then let's head north."

Miledy:
"Gale...I'm sorry. My squad was the only one assigned to look for the princess because King Zephiel wanted to keep it in secrecy. I'm sorry that I got you into this mess..."

Gale:
"You have enough to worry about already... Don't fret over things like that."

Miledy:
"But you're one of the captains working directly under General Murdock..."

Gale:
"Don't worry about that, General Murdock has agreed to my helping you. In fact, he wants me to help you find the princess and the Fire Emblem as soon as possible."

Miledy:
"...Do you think that Princess Guinevere has the Fire Emblem?"

Gale:

Mary:
"We found you yesterday, collapsed at the entrance of the village, all bruised and blood-spattered. We brought you here and treated your wounds."

Elphin:
"And you are...?"

Mary:
"My name is Mary. I live here."

Elphin:
"...Live here...? No! This village will be endangered if I stay here... Or... Perhaps it is too late if it has already been one day..."

Mary:
"?"

Elphin:
"I am Elphin...a member of the rebel forces. The marquess will be sure to send troops to capture me."

Mary:
"The rebels..."

Elphin:
"Miss Mary, you must escape. This village will be in danger as well..."

Mary:
"...No, I will stay."

Elphin:
"...Why?"

Mary:
"My younger brother is out looking for work his friend from next door. His friend asked me to take care of his little sister while they're gone. So... I must wait here until they return."

Elphin:
"I see... Then all I can do to protect this village is to leave. Thank you very much for treating my wounds. ...Please take care."

Mary:
"Yes, you too..."

4th Turn

(Inside Castle)

Zinc:
"Useless fools! Does it take this long to find one measly rebel member!?"

Soldier:
"It's the Lycia Alliance Army! They are fighting to protect the villagers!"

Zinc:
"The Alliance Army? They would turn against Etruria!?"

Soldier:
"We have just received a message from the capital at Djuto! It says... 'The Lycia Alliance Army is suspected of treachery against Etruria. They may be allied with the bandits. Capture them!'"

Zinc:
"Oh? Allied with the bandits? How ironic! They're desperate to get rid of the Alliance Army to save their own hides..."

Soldier:
"What do you mean, my lord?"

Zinc:
"This is not the mainland. Might makes right here."

Soldier:
"I'm not quite sure I understand..."

Zinc:
"Don't worry, you don't have to. Is that all from Djuto?"

Soldier:
"No. Lord Arcard has provided us with reinforcements."

Zinc:
"What!?"

Soldier:
"They should be arriving shortly."

Zinc:
"Damn! We won't get all of the credit if we defeat the Alliance Army with the aid of reinforcements! We need to finish this quickly... Ah, of course! Get Scollan!"

Soldier:
"Yes, sir."

(Scollan appears)

Scollan:
"Yeah? What can I do for you, Master Zinc?"

Zinc:
"I need you to set fire to all of the villages in this area. Make sure you kill off the villagers as well. Leave none of them alive!"

Scollan:
"...What if there's treasure?"

Zinc:
"Do with it as you wish. Just hurry!"

Scollan:
"Got it, Master Zinc. Hehehe..."

6th Turn

(Scollan, Gonzales, and some Bandits appear as enemy units)

Scollan:
"Gonzales! Where's Gonzales!"

(Gonzales appears)

Gonzales:
"Here... I here..."

Scollan:
"There's a village to the south. You get that?"

Gonzales:
"Get it."

Scollan:
"That might be a hidden base for the rebel forces. Master Zinc says to burn it down, village and all."

Gonzales:
"Village and all..."

Scollan:
"Right. Now git! A stupid hulk like you only comes in use at times like this. You better not screw up!"

Gonzales:
"I...I..."

Scollan:
"You got a problem?"

Gonzales:
"N-No..."

(Gonzales leaves)

Scollan:
"Heh, he looks like hell but has that damn kind heart. He shouldn't be scared of bustin' up one tiny village. You guys, you got that too?"

Bandit:
"Sure thing, boss!"

8th Turn

(Klein, Thito, and their troops appear as enemy units)

Klein:
"So that's the Lycia Alliance Army..."

Thito:
"They're supposed to be fighting against the bandits..."

Klein:
"I know. But Lord Arcard says that they are working with the bandits to attack innocent villagers. Why are they doing the opposite of what they were told...?"

Thito:
"......"

Klein:
"Thito, can you take your troops and attack from the north? I'll start attacking from here."

Thito:
"Yes, General Klein."

(Thito leaves)

Klein:
"Thito! Wait."

Thito:
"Yes?"

Klein:
"I heard that you have some siblings."

Thito:
"Yes. I have two sisters, one older, one younger."

Klein:
"Are they both Pegasus Knights like you?"

Thito:
"Yes. Why do you ask?"

Klein:
"Well, you see, I have a younger sister myself..."

Thito:
"You have a sister? She must be very beautiful."

Klein:
"Thank you. Yes, she is pretty. But I heard that she got tangled up in some, mess and I don't know where she is now..."

Thito:
"What? Oh my..."

Klein:
"I've sent out some people to look for her, but they haven't had any luck. If I weren't on this mission, I would go search for her myself..."

Thito:

Klein:

"About what?"

Soldier:
"Lord Arcard said to leave the fighting to Ilia's Pegasus Knights so that we Etrurians suffer the least casualties."

Klein:
"Don't be ridiculous, they are our companions and trustworthy comrades. We will fight full-force to support them. Understood?"

Soldier:
"Yes, General Klein."

Klein:
"...Still, Lord Arcard's story is strange... The Alliance Army just got here. Would they get tied in with the bandits so quickly...?"

Soldier:
"Lord Zinc, the reinforcements from Djuto will be arriving shortly."

Zinc:
"Damn! We're having enough trouble as it is... I don't need any reinforcements to take all the credit!"

Thito:
"Are you ready? We're moving southward!"

Soldier:
"Captain... Are you sure we'll be all right?"

Thito:
"Why?"

Soldier:
"Perhaps the Etrurian army means to use us up front as pawns..."

Thito:
"Who says that?"

Soldier:
"One of our group heard rumors like that in the Etrurian army."

Thito:
"If you take rumors seriously all the time, you won't be able to do anything in battle."

Soldier:

Thito:
"Besides, even if that were true, General Klein wouldn't approve of it."

Soldier:
"Do you think so?"

"General Klein's not like that. I trust him."

Soldier:

Gonzales:

Lilina:
"No. You are afraid. You're scared that people will throw stones at you, that they'll tell you to go away again."

Clarine:
"I'm sorry I left without telling you... But I wanted to see you so badly."

Klein:
"The things you would do... Well, you're safe, and that's what matters. And what brings you out here? Did you find someone trustworthy to hire?"

Clarine:
"No, I joined the Lycia Alliance Army and have been fighting alongside them."

Klein:
"The Lycia Alliance Army!?"

Clarine:
"Yes, my healing staves have been very useful!"

Clarine:

"I was sent here to protect the villagers. To fulfill my mission, I will hereby join the Lycia Alliance Army."

Clarine:
"Klein!"

Klein:
"Then let's go, shall we? Will you introduce me to General Roy?"

Clarine:
"Of course! I love you, Klein."

(Klein joins. His troops become NPC units)

Conversation (Klein, Thito)

Klein:
"Thito!"

Thito:
"General Klein! What is the matter?"

Klein:
"I've made up my mind. We're going to fight alongside General Roy in the Lycia Alliance Army."

Thito:
"Understood, sir. Then we will as well."

Klein:
"Aren't you going to ask why?"

Thito:
"We are mercenaries. We follow our employer's every order. Besides..."

Klein:
"Besides...?"

"I trust your judgment, General Klein."

After beating the map

Merlinus:
"Master Roy, there is a young man here to see you. He says he is a member of the rebels..."

Roy:
"I'll see him. Let him pass."

(Elphin appears)

Elphin:
"Are you Master Roy? Pleased to meet you, my name is Elphin. I am a member of the rebel forces here."

Roy:
"I am Roy of the Lycia Alliance Army."

Elphin:
"You have my thanks for saving our village here."

Roy:
"No, we simply did what we felt was right."

Elphin:
"But now you have rebelled against Etruria. Certainly you had thought of that before you took action?"

Roy:
"Of course. As I said, we did what we felt was right. Although what we did is a sign of rebellion against Etruria, if the truth about these islands is made public, they will understand. I have sent a letter to a trustworthy member of the Etrurian court. If she takes the appropriate measures, I think we can tip the tables in our favor."

Elphin:
"I would not be so sure of that..."

Roy:
"What do you mean?"

Elphin:
"Did you ever think it odd...that Etruria sent you, in particular, to get rid of the bandits?"

Roy:
"Yes... Of course we did."

Elphin:

Merlinus:
"M-Master Roy!"

Elphin:
"Your country could be peril. Are you sure you want to be wasting your time on a little island like this?"

Merlinus:
"He's right! If Bern wanted to get us away from Lycia so they could invade, then we must return at once..."

Roy:
"...I'm not going back."

Merlinus:
"What!? Why!?"

Elphin:
"......"

Roy:
"Right now, it's very difficult to judge what information is true and what is false. The worst thing to do is is to simply jump to information presented in front of you. Sure, I'm worried about Lycia...but my father is there, and General Cecilia also promised to take care of our land. But our army is the only one stationed on these islands."

Elphin:

Merlinus:
"Tried us? So what you said was a lie!?"

Elphin:
"I have not lied. But, I did present the rumor in such a way that you would easily jump to it. But Master Roy kept his head. I feel that I would like to serve an individual like you. Master Roy, please count me among your ranks."

Roy:
"...I don't like the idea that you were testing us, but if you're willing to help, then we will welcome you."

Elphin:
"Then..."

Roy:
"Yes, please fight alongside us. Well, then, back to business. What can we do to help the people on these isles?"

Elphin:
"We must head south...towards Caledonia."

Roy:
"Why?"

Elphin:
"Castle Idina is located there. It is a detention center for the people being sent to Mt Ebrakhm."

Roy:
"All right, then let's rescue those people first!"

Elphin:
"Also... Master Roy, please take this sword."

Roy:
"What is this?"

Elphin:
"It is a sword called the Wyrmslayer. I hear it was created during the Scouring to use against the Dragons."

Roy:
"Wyrmslayer? This isn't a Divine Weapon?"

Elphin:
"No. The Divine Weapons can only be used by those who have skill equal to the Eight Heroes. However, this weapon should be usable by ordinary people as well."

Mary:
"Are you this army's leader?"

Roy:
"Yes."

Mary:
"I wanted to thank you for protecting our village."

Roy:
"No... I just did what I felt was right."

Mary:
"Please take this as a token of our gratitude."

"General Klein, we will stay here and restructure the area, as you directed us."

Klein:
"Good."

Soldier:
"We wish we could fight alongside you. Oh, and here, here is the arrow that you had us keep. I will give it back to you. Farewell, and good luck, General Klein."

Klein:
"Thank you."

Soldier:
"Captain! We will return to Ilia to make our report."

Thito:
"Thanks."

Soldier:
"Oh, and this... Your sister gave it to me before we left. Please be careful..."

Thito:
"Thank you. You be careful too."
